Gilding Caledonian Tower

The Clock Tower

Repairing the weathervane
The clock tower of the Caledonian Market was built in 1855. The 46metres (151ft) tower and weathervane are Grade 11* listed. The weathervane was stripped of paint and metal repairs were carried out. My brief was to prepare, paint and gild using 23.5ct yellow loose leaf.

The scaffold was well protected by being encased in plastic which kept the wind down. This allowed gilding to be done in situ on the dragon and on the lower scrolls and letters on the vane. The lower level frame supporting the weather vane was filled and painted red.
