About me
My passion for artisan skills, craftsmanship and history has guided me through many years of interesting and unusual projects. I began my career as an apprentice signwriter and gilder with a commercial signwriting company, then moved to the National Trust.
I joined the National Trust building team as a signwriter and decorator where I learned about paperhanging and traditional paints whilst working alongside many skilled craftsmen.
At the Trust I was awarded a William Morris Fellowship by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings through which I expanded my knowledge by working with the top experts in the country.
After a career break to raise a family I returned to gilding and decorating. Since then I have been working freelance, both supervising teams of gilders or painters and as a sole gilder on mixed skills teams. Many varied projects have come my way all with their own challenges and I have enjoyed devising interesting solutions.
Gilding is an old craft skill which hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. Like many artisan trades gilding has many secrets and closely guarded recipes. Even though I’m highly experienced, I always enjoy learning new ways to get the best solution and finishes.
My skills cover gilding, painting, wallpaper hanging, signwriting, traditional paints and stencilling.
If you would like to discuss a project please get in touch.
